Today we had a trial student in the class, so spent some time on introductions. She and Mr. Y, talked about their efforts to learn English, and the things they do for listening practice...for example listening to English songs/music, watching movies, etc. They also discovered, that they are both very big fans of the band 'One Direction', and were very excited about the band's new album, which will be released in November. Ms. T. went to their concert in Tokyo, and was delighted to catch the pet water bottle, that Harry Stiles threw from the stage (one of her prized possessions!). We talked about music in general, and the relationship of famous bands and their fans, including the general hysteria of the audiences at big concerts. We also talked about computers, the internet, RPG games, and languages. Here are some of the words and phrases we looked at today...

Freak (noun) = Something with very unusual features, that make it very different from other things of its type. eg. freak weather. [note] In the 1960~70's the hippie generations used to call themselves 'freaks'.

Hysteria (noun) = A state of uncontrolled excitement, or extreme fear. eg. During concerts of the band 'One Direction', the level of hysteria in the audience is unbelievable!

Mainstream (adjective) = Considered ordinary, or normal, and accepted or used by most people. eg. There are a lot of untrue things reported in mainstream media, simply to influence and control the minds of it's audiences.

Relieved (adjective) = Happy and relaxed because something bad has not happened, or because a bad situation has ended. eg. She was relieved to hear, that her friend was not traveling on the train, that crashed.

Phrase

'On it's last legs' = [informal] Old, in bad condition, and not likely to continue working much longer. eg. My washing machine is on it's last legs, and I will soon need to buy a new one!
