(F class) - 3 students = 8 ~ 9pm.
(F1*class) - 0 student = 9 ~ 10pm.
It was a pleasure to welcome back Mr. N., who has not been able to come to class since September, as his job has been really busy! Some of the students were meeting for the first time, so we spent some time on introductions, and each person talked about his/her job. Mr. M. talked about his plans to go on a 'working holiday' to Australia, and the others had a lot of questions about it. The minimum wage in Australia vs. Japan's minimum wage, the cost of living in Australia, the cost of a working holiday visa, etc. We talked about working conditions, and how unhealthy it is to eat one's lunch, while sitting at one's work station, or desk, but sadly unavoidable for many people. In the second class we talked about governments, politicians and how they are 'controlled' by big businesses, and banking corporations, through 'sponsoring', and 'lobbying' , and how they in turn 'control' the public, through TV. and news media outlets, ..the truth about wars, and who benefits from them, etc. I talked about the book written by George Orwell called '1984', and the parallels within the book, and the world we are living in today. Here are some of the words we looked at today...
All aboard! (phrase) = A public announcement used for telling passengers, that they need to get on a ship, bus, or train, because it will be leaving soon.
Dystopia ( noun) = An imaginary (or real) place, or situation, in which everything in society is extremely bad.
Goodies (informal noun) = Things that are nice to eat, such as cakes and chocolates.
Perks (of a job) (noun) = An extra payment, or benefit (often unofficial), that you get in your job. eg. The perks of working in a bakery, is getting lots of free cakes!
Pernicious (formal adjective) = Very dangerous or harmful, especially to someone’s moral character.
Enough for today! Thank you for coming this evening! Hope to see you all again soon! Rita.
