Today we talked about a variety of things, and I also taught some phrases which included the word 'cross'. Take a look at the following phrases...

' It crossed my mind...' = If something crosses your mind, you think of it, but not for very long, or very seriously..(almost like a random thought, that passed through your mind, but soon was forgotten). eg. It crossed my mind, that I should give him a call later, but I forgot all about it!

'Cross a line' = To go beyond accepted limits, or standards of acceptable behaviour. eg. He was teasing her about her weight gain, but he realized he had 'crossed a line', when he saw the hurt expression on her face. Sometimes he isn't very sensitive about other people's feelings!

"Cross that bridge when you come to it" = To deal with something when (and if ) it happens, and not worry about it before. (A way of saying you are not going to worry about 'possible' problems, that might arise in the future, before they happen, because you don't know the future.

'Cross your fingers', or 'Keep your fingers crossed' = To put your middle finger over your first finger (as a wish for good luck). This can be done either for one's own wishes, or you can do this to wish someone else 'good luck'. eg. (1) = "I bought some lottery tickets yesterday, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!" (2) = "He told me he took the TOEIC test last week, and was hoping for a high score, so I told him I'd keep my fingers crossed for him!"
