We had the pleasure of meeting a new member tonight, coming for her first classes.. welcome Ms. U. We also welcomed back one
of our regular members, Ms. T., who has been absent since last December! Lots of introductions all round tonight! Ms.T. told us about her experiences, and impressions from her trip to Morrocco, during the new year break, and also (we were sorry to hear) about getting 'acute pneumonia' when she returned to Japan! She has been very sick, and we were glad to hear she was recovering. We talked about many topics tonight, including everyone, each telling about a traumatic 'childhood accident', they remembered experiencing... some crazy stories! We talked about health issues, the legal issues involving 'euthanasia', now being discussed (and hotly debated) in many countries around the world. We talked about our favorite movie stars. We covered a lot of new vocabulary tonight which are as follows...
Agony (noun) = Extreme pain.
Brace (noun) = (dental) A set of wires that you wear on your teeth to push them into the correct position. The American word is braces.
Euthanasia ( noun) = The practice of killing a very old, or very sick person, without causing them pain. When someone in such a condition, asks to be killed, it's called 'voluntary euthanasia'.
Elocution (noun) = The skill of speaking clearly, and with an accent, that is considered correct. Many actors take elocution lessons to train them to speak with various different 'accents', for the 'character roles' they are act in movies.
Dizziness (noun) = A feeling that the things around you, (or your head) is/are spinning , especially making you feel off balance, and that you might lose your balance, and fall down. The adjective for this feeling is called 'dizzy'. eg. Aged people often experience dizziness during the very cold season.
Hayfever (noun) = An allergy to different kinds of plant, tree, or grass pollens, commonly experience by many people in the spring season.
Hypothermia (noun) = (medical) A serious medical condition in which your body temperature has become too low, after being exposed to extremely cold temperature.. People who have become lost in the mountains in extremely cold conditions, have often died of 'hypothermia'
Karma (noun) = A belief (originally from Hinduism and Buddhism), that the way in which you behaved in past lives affects your present life, and the way in which you behave in this life, will affect your future lives. We sometimes talk about 'instant karma', in which, you did something 'wrong', and instantly, or soon after the 'wrong doing', something bad happens to you, as if you are being punished for the action. eg. The man experienced 'instant karma' , when he crashed the bicycle, he had stolen from his neighbor!
Swindle (verb) = To cheat someone in order to get their money. eg. The man was arrested by the police, after he was caught swindling money from old people.
So that's all for today, folks! Thank you for coming to my classes, this evening! See again, soon. Rita.
