We talked about many things today, including the situation for men to taking an extended 'maternity leave of absence' from their jobs, the previous weekend's activities, and this weekend's plans. We also had a look at the many ways to use the verb 'put'.
Some words and phrases we also covered today were...
Exhilarating (adjective) = making you feel happy, excited or full of energy. eg. Skiing can be very exhilarating.
'Frown upon/on someone/something..' (phrasal verb) = to not approve of someone, or something. eg. Making 'personal' calls is 'frowned upon' in our office.
'Jump the queue' ( informal phrase) = To move into place, in front of a line of people, who have been waiting longer than you have. eg. In Osaka it is common for people to 'jump the queue' on the subway platform.
'Raring to do/go...' (informal expression) = To be ready to do something, or go somewhere, and feel impatient to get started.
'Run like clockwork' (informal idiom) = Happening, or working smoothly, and correctly, without any problems or delays. eg. The Osaka subway system 'runs like clockwork 99% of the time.
'Can take it, or leave it' (informal phrase) = To not have any preference, or care whether you have, see, or do something. eg. I like white rice, but I can take it or leave it.
Although we looked at many ways to use the word 'put', it would take too long for me to write so many sentences (and explanations here), so if you would like to check them out, please follow the following 'link'....
